The number of apples are 28.

The number of oranges are  24.

What are the linear equations that represents the question?

a - o = 4 equation 1

a + o = 52 equation 2

Where:

  • a = apples
  • o = oranges

How many apples are there?

Add equation 1 and equation 2 together

2a = 56

Divide both sides by 2

a = 56/2

a = 28

How many oranges are there?

Subtract 28 from 52

52 - 28 = 24
