Brazil was first colonized by the Portuguese in 1500s. The Portuguese were the first European settlers to arrive in the area, led by adventurous Pedro Cabra. In 1822 that prince regent Dom Pedro declared Brazil's independence from Portugal. This was formalized in 1825 through a teaty signed by both Brazil and Portugal
