x^2 + 4x  = 12

add 4 to each side  (4/2)^2

x^2 + 4x + 4 = 12 + 4

(x+2)^2 = 16

take the square root of each side  (gives a positive and negative answer)

x+2 = 4    x+2 = -4

x=2        x=-6
