They are usually the most irritating line of defense and the body's reaction to a potential contaminant.

For example, when one touches poison ivy, the body will release histamines to react to the allergen. A blotchy red patch will appear on the skin (possibly several). An anti-histamine, like Benadryl, can help clam these symptoms.
