You want to start with the distribution property
(2)(x) + (2)(5) = 3x + 1
2x + 10 = 3x + 1
2x - 3x = 1 - 10
-x = -9
Multiply by -1 to remove the negative sign
x = 9
3y - 4 = 6 - 2y
3y + 2y = 6 + 4
5y = 10
y = 10/5
