It is true that the light from the strobe lights create strong shadows and the absence of other accessories causes to be too strong. That is the main reason why most photographers use umbrella and other accessories to soften the effect of the light.
Strobe lights have many advantages but also disadvantages. They do require other things to get the perfect lighting and can create shadows (which can be good or bad!).
