To solve this, you need to isolate/get the variable "b" by itself in the inequality:            b = unknown number

-12 < 8 + b    Subtract 8 on both sides to get "b" by itself

-12 - 8 < 8 - 8 + b

-20 < b      (-20 is less than b, or b is any number greater than -20)
