step 1: group Y on left side
(-2 - 3)y = -5y

step 2: group constants on left side
8 - 9 = -1

step 3: form modified equation
-5y - 1 = 11

step 4: group constants
-5y - 1 + 1 = -11 + 1

step 5: cancel 1 on left side
-5y = -10

step 6: divide each side by -5
-5y/-5 = -10/-5

answer: y = 2
