How is the principle of federalism connected to the idea of limited government

The principle of federalism divides the powers between the powers of the federation and the individual powers of the state. The federal government makes laws that all the members of the federation have to obey, but in turn the states can make their own laws that are not enumerated by the federation and the federation has to acknowledge and respect these laws.
