If I was in your shoes, I would pick the scary dream because that's usually how they start, but there is no indication that this character fell asleep beforehand or woke up afterward. There also is no mention of a smell of any kind, so the skunk is ruled out as well. Especially since it went by the character's head instead of near the feet or legs.
