The Spanish-American War, which resulted in an American victory, set the stage for American interventionism on what many saw as humanitarian grounds. American control of Cuba after the war serves as an example.

I think the answer is because the U.S. interfered in the affairs of Spain in Cuba, but I could be wrong....
