The Dawes Act allowed individual Native Americans to receive individual ownership over land. The 1887 legislation gave the American President the authority to survey land belonging to Native American tribes and to divide it up into individual parcels for individual Indians. The Dawes Act was intended to alleviate poverty among Native Americans and to help them assimilate into American society.
