The Writs of Assistance were court orders that enabled customs officers to conduct searches of premises for contraband. This meant that British officials could examine any colonial ship, business and even home at any time. The writs were passed in order to enforce the Acts of Trade, which had also been passed by the British Empire. The colonists believed this to be a violation of their privacy and natural rights.
